This was my 7th time hunting with Wild Skies, but my first time heading out on a hunt with my son. All of my hunts with Wild Skies have been memorable and enjoyable but this one ranks at the very top. I have been on over 40 elk hunts in various states and the hunt this year ranks in the top 3 of all my hunts. It was textbook perfect. I patiently waited for a mature 6×6 bull elk to respond to my call and took my shot and got it done on my second day of elk hunting. I can hardly wait to come back again next year!

It was field of dreams at Wild Skies. We had hunted in various spots throughout Colorado and often we saw no sign of elk. We only had a few days to hunt during rifle 3 and never having hunted there before we knew we would have to make the best of each day. We found meadows and dark timber that were loaded with fresh sign and although we didn’t bag our elk on that trip we have already put in for next year.

The last day was interesting… the guys went out 1.5 miles on east fork trail. The bulls (4) popped up as the guys went to leave. They were ranged at 500 yards but across the river. The one guy in the group said they were massive and would have easily gone over 300”. Oh well, if the season was a few more days I think we could have brought home a few. The first truck to leave the cabin pulled out early Sunday. They sat at the intersection there in Pyramid and watched 30 elk come across including legal bulls with their rifles packed deep in the truck. Overall the group had a great time and were wowed by the lodge. I cannot wait to come back in the summer as the trout are there and hungry. Everyone from Pennsylvania made it home safe after the long 30 hour drive east.

Our stay at Wild Skies’ Flat Tops cabin created a memory that will last a lifetime. Within easy access to multiple horse and hiking trails we enjoyed spectacular views of snowcapped mountains, beautiful aspen groves, high mountain lakes and wildlife. It didn’t hurt either that we were surrounded by elk and my buddy and I took home two beautiful 6x6 elk. The facility was more like a mountain home than a cabin. It provided the perfect oasis for a weary hunter to kick his feet up at the end of the day.

My experience at Wild Skies exceeded all of my highest expectations. I stayed at Wild Skies in August of 2008 for my annual Antelope hunt. Lisa at Wild Skies was as friendly and accommodating a host as they get. She really made my hunting party feel at home. The accommodations were excellent. The cabin was super clean and everything we could want at a reasonable price. I've had the good fortune to have stayed and hunted with some very nice outfitters, and Wild Skies rates right up there in terms of the over all experience.
It goes without saying that I would recommend Wild Skies to anyone that would like to experience a Colorado hunt in the rugged heart of the Rockies in accommodations that are rustic but elegant and comfortable. Part of any hunt is the opportunity to meet new friends and share old stories. We certainly did that. It was a great week of hunting and the hospitality at Wild Skies was outstanding. I look forward to returning next year.

This is the third year in a row I have archery hunted elk and stayed at Wild Skies Cabins in GMU 12 in NW Colorado. The natural surroundings and elk, mule deer and bear populations are strong and in an amazing setting. I felt every direction was a wonderful display of God’s country and the creatures he created. I went home with an elk on my very first trip and made many new friendships through the years. I saw plenty of elk and within 30 yards a record Pope & Young mule deer that was 230+_ class, but unfortunately, even though I had the shot of a lifetime I didn’t have a deer license or he would have been mine. I will definitely be back.

Thanks for providing a setting for what was certainly a 5 plus day experience that I do not feel could have been better. The cabin was first rate and the time spent on the Flat Tops with my son was absolutely fantastic. We took home a 5x6 and a 7x7.

The lodge was fantastic! Clean, roomy and comfortable. Had a great kitchen for cooking our nightly meals. The view from the lodge was awesome! We hunted elk first rifle season. Out of the four of us hunters, we took 2 6×6 elk. There was plenty of area above the lodge to set up to look for elk. Was very pleased with the hunt and the lodge. It was our first time hunting in that area and would highly recommend it!

The White River National Forest has the largest elk herd on EARTH and the Routt National Forest to the North is not far behind. The fact is that most non-western hunters just want the opportunity to get a shot at an elk and these two forests are the best in the West in terms of opportunity. … non-residents can hunt the Wilderness areas of these forests, which can provide great backcountry hunting opportunities in the Flattops.
Sage Sam is right on. White River and Routt are the very good elk hunting. I have arrowed an elk every trip out there and when you get in the back country you do not see anyone…

NW Colorado is Elk Central as my sister put it. I have taken elk there the last 4 years and looking to make it 5 straight this year!
